Introduction

NOAA provides a product labeled WRKOFFPZ7 which provides a summary of the wind and sea state for areas off the coast of Baja, MX and the Gulf of California. This product is used by boaters in the area and often shared over the Amigo Net.

The problem

The simple text format with line wrapping makes it difficult to scan for trends in the winds or sea state.

The solution

A script which reads the NOAA report and attempts to format it as a comma separated values (csv) file, which can be read by most spreadsheet programs, including Microsoft Excel and LibreOffice Calc.

The caveat

The NOAA WRKOFFPZ7 report appears to have a consistent structure and the script makes assumptions on that structure to do it's work. However, there is no formal definition and small changes in the structure could cause gross mis-formating in the output csv file. If it doesn't look right, please refer back to the original WRKOFFPZ7 report

Usage

By selecting the link your browser will offer to download a csv file which you can either save to your local storage or open directly in your spreadsheet program. On some computers, opening directly in your spreadsheet program may open the file read only. Once it is opened, you may want to resize the columns for easy viewing. Sometimes a few cells have a lot of text and cause the columns to be excessively wide.

Tip

When I am unable to receive the current report before the morning Amigo net, I open the most recent version I have, assuming it is no more than a few days old, and add an extra column for wind and maybe sea state. That way as I listen to the net controller read the current forcast, I only have to enter the information for the days of which the forecast has changed, saving time and reducing copy errors.

SailMail and Winkink

At this time this format is not available through SailMail or Winlink. Unfortunately I do not know how to make it work. I have tried requesting the link with SailDocs but it seems to refuse to return the csv format, as it is designed for text only. I have not looked into it further. If anyone has any ideas on how to accomplish this, please let me know.
